Now in London, getting deep into January, I am warming myself up by flipping through pictures of our morning visit in July at the incredible Pietrabbondante, Teatro dei Sanniti.
A near private experience – only one small group of Italians arrived as we were climbing back up to the car – the visit was very special.
Sitting in the amazingly comfortable amphitheatre, Gianni told us about the Sannite tribe which constructed the theatre, temples and commercial buildings that surround it.
The stone work was amazing – cut like sculpture
The ruins date from the 5th century BC – and probably re-built in the 3rd century after being destroyed by Hannibal’s army.
The main structure is the largest surviving Sannite Temple.
The beautiful and well preserved theatre boasts the oldest known shaped back support – the orchestra, bleachers and grassy slope provided seating for up to 2,500 people.
A few days later we were invited to attend a performance of Processo alla Strega – starring Ornella Muti.
The production formed part of La Sannita Teatro Festival thrilling to be able to understand a lot of the play and set against the backdrop of the valley, it was very dramatic.
I was so glad to have convinced the other students that despite the gorgeous warm evening as we left Agnone for the theatre, that we would need sweaters……….of course we did by 10pm. I was glad to have two in fact!
